The first one is from Australia, specifically in Monarto Zoo located in the southern part of the continent. Zoo’ staff is looking forward to see around November 2018 the sixth calf for 23 years old Southern White Rhino lady Umqali. Usually zoo do not perform ultra sounds on its rhinos because the rhino skin is too thick. So Umqali’s pregnancy was confirmed through blood testing. This baby would be the second for the pair Umqali and Satara. The two had a first baby called Tundu that unfortunately accidentally died last year.

The second pregnancy if from Fresno Chaffee Zoo (USA, California). Southern White Rhino couple Kayla and Tim is expecting a second baby after Rudo was born in 2017. This pregnancy is a surprise for us too because it’s very rare that a breeding herd composed only by one female and one male works so well. We weren’t expecting that Kayla could became pregnant again. We are very happy to be wrong on this. It is not known when the baby should be delivered, probably at the beginning of the next year. In the meantime the zoo is working to find Rudo a new home by fall 2018: it is important for him to be moved because Tim could not tolerate him anymore has he grew up in a mature male and mom Kayla could reject him when her new baby is born.
