Great Joy from Southern Australia: in Monarto Zoo (AU) mom Umqali gave birth on 5 November 2018 to an healthy baby girl. This calf has been named Imani, that it’s a Swahili word for Faith; Imani’s dad is bull Satara.
Umqali has given birth 5 times previously but unfortunately only two of them are alive at the moment, a bull called Kei and a female called Nadira.
Last year her last daughter called Tundu accidentaly died in the facility. Even Satara has only got two calves alive, a female called Kibibi and a male called Jabari, so baby Imani is really genetically important for the Oceania’s Souther White Rhino population. We do hope that there will be more calves in the near future.
