On 23 April 7 years old Indian Rhino Akuti made history giving birth to the first ever rhino conceived through induced ovulation and artificial insemination in Miami Zoo (USA). The calf was conceived in this way because between Akouti and the bull Suru the natural method was not working (even if the facility does not disclose the reasons behind this issue). The calf, the first one for its mom, is still not visible to the public, since it needs time to create a strong bond with Akuti.

The gender has not been disclosed yet, even if watching video and pictures of the calf we are guessing that it’s likely to be a female.

Suru’s semen was also used in Buffalo Zoo, where the resident female rhino is pregnant and is due later this year.
