There is a new baby Indian Rhino at Whipsnade (UK)! The little lady was born on Sunday 8 December 2019 to mum Behan and dad Hugo after 16 months of pregnancy.
Her name is not public yet: she will be probably named after one of the Facility’s donours next year.
The calf weighted 70 kgs at birth and is the fifth baby for her mum that has given birth to three male calves in a row since 2010.
According to some sources, this calf could be the last for Behan and the whole breeding herd at Whipsnade Zoo. Behan is of wild origin and she is supposed to be 23 years old: could this female baby be her last ever? We do not know for sure. What we know for sure is that the other Rhino cow at Whipsnade, wild-born Beluki, can’t be a mum anymore: unfortunately she has a serious health issue that prevents her to carry a pregnancy safely.

In the whole Europe, Behan’s calf is the 14th rhino calf born this year, with 3 of them being Indian Rhinos. Curiously, all the three European Indian Rhino calves are females.
