We have an update about Eastern Black Rhino Eric, that left San Diego to reach his new home in Tanzania: he’s doing well and he will be paired with a female called Laikipia, if everything proceeds adequately. We had the suspect, and now we can confirm, that Laikipia was born in Port Lympne (UK). She is 9 years older than Eric and was transfered in Tanzania in 2004. She lost her mate few years later but since then she has never been paired to a male: it is unclear why. There are great expectations about Eric and Laikipia to become a breeding couple: we do hope so but we have some enquiries on the motivation on Laikipia exclusion from any breeding and on why aren’t native animals used for this purpose, instead unifying two genetic lines developed in different continents. If new updates will be received we will post them on our website!

Finally, on 10 October 2018, the second Southern White rhino resident in Erie Zoo (Pennsylvania, USA) , has left his home and was transfered in Florida for breeding purpose. The zoo announced that at the end of the month two new Southern White Rhino will fill the empty rhino barns: the two are half brothers, as Spike and Victor, and are probably between 2 and 4 years old. We are waiting for further informations.
