Two more rhino births!

The first baby is a male born in Schmiding (AU) on 19 October. He is the second white rhino calf born in that facility in just 3 weeks! Father is the residing male, Brutus, while mom is 15 years old Niki who gave birth to a calf 7 years ago! This calf, still without a name, is her second one. We are very happy for this double achievement from this zoo. There’s a third female residing there, 7 years old Renette, and we hope she can also give birth in the near future!

The second one is a female white born in The Wilds (USA). It’s a great news because the little calf born on 23 October called Scout (the name is the one of a donor) is the first daughter for Agnes (Rose), that is only 6 years old, and for male Kengele. It’s a great achievement because it’s a new couple! The Wilds imported two male rhinos from other Zo in USA a few years ago, Roscoe and Kengele, and divided its big female rhino herd in 2 parts. In one Roscoe already had 4 calves and Kengele had the first one in the other. Agnes is daughter of Evey, a female from the other herd: splitting the two has proved successfull, since it is known that the mother could suppress the daughter’s cycle if kept too much close one another. If Agnes’s baby is a marvellous news, there are still a couple of things that can be improved, for example remove Firefly from the maternal herd (Firefly’s mum is Zenzele) and put her in the other.  We do hope to hear of more Rhino babies from The Wilds in the near future, hopefully from other first-time mums!
