During the first week of April the transfer of the Eastern Black Rhino Wanda from Rotterdam Zoo (NL) to the new exhibit of the Győr Zoo (HU) was completed: also Mana from Magdeburg (DE) is living there, from October 2018.

The transfer went well, Wanda is already in her new house. She was firstly transferred to Rotterdam a couple of years ago hoping to stimulate here for breeding, moreover since she has a good genetic value, having no direct brothers. Luckily her relatives at the moment are successful in reproduction. Unluckily she had no pregnancies there, even because it was reported that she has a very erratic cycle and hence it has been difficult to propose here to the male during the correct periods; moreover, as the majority of the black rhinos, she’s an animal that likes being alone and she’s also a bit nervous preferring silent environments

Győr was chosen since it’s a new rhino older and some sources reports that it would be able to host even more than two rhinos: it is unknown at the moment if this would be done with a breeding purpose or just to hold them, this because Mana is very old and Wanda will be hardly chosen to procreate in the future.

The two of them seems to be getting along: Wanda is very recognizable since she’s missing a piece of tail! We hope that the facility will accept more rhinos in the future, being it for a breeding program or just to receive rhinos that will not be able to reproduce anymore.
