We report some updates from the world of our beloved Rhinos.

Dvur Kralove (CZ) lost its oldest Eastern Black Rhino, Isis, during Summer 2018. Isis was born in late Autumn of 1977 in Cincinnati (USA) but arrived in Czech Republic barely one year later. During his long life in the Facility, 40 years and half!, Isis become the primary breeding bull, fathering 10 calves. Most of them are still alive nowadays and are important partecipants of the European breeding program for the Eastern Black Rhino metapopulation. Isis’s latest grandchild was born in early December 2018 to Maisha!

Brevard Zoo (Florida, USA) has welcomed a new male Southern White Rhino in October 2018: Frankie from Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Brevard has three more Rhinos, a male and two females. Frankie’s tranfer has the goal to bring offspring at the Zoo. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom (Florida, USA) Frankie’s place was taken by Spike, a male that previously resided at Erie Zoo. He will soon meet the five females that resides at the Facility. Finger crossed from more baby rhinos in the Usa!

Great joy from Erfurt (DE)! On Saturday 29 December 2018 Southern White Rhino Marcita, after 17 months of pregnancy, gave birth to a healthy male calf. This 13 years old first-time mum arrived in Erfurt in 2016: she was transferred from another Facility where she didn’t breed. Bull Dino, Marcita’s calf’s father, has only one other offspring, an adult female called Duma.
Marcita’s baby is another great success of the European Endangered Species Plan regarding in particular the Southern White Rhino. We do hope to hear soon about more transfers and more babies rhinos!
