Finally a second white rhino female arrives in Europe. The calf was born in Pairi Daiza (BE) to mom Eleonor and bull Joby: for both she’s the second calf. This birth was really awaited for and follows by just a couple of days the first calf of the other zoo’s female, Madiba. As if often happens different females residing in the same facility give birth a few days apart: this same year, for example, it also happened in Schmiding (AT) with two birthes a few weeks aside. Another Southern White Rhino female arrived at The Wilds (Ohio, USA). The male Kengele had his second daughter from Anan on 6 December 2019 not too much apart from little Scout. This new calf was named Bing, from a donator married coupledal. For Anan this is the third calf from three different males: being Anan a fourth-generation female, Bing is the third fifth generation calf born at The Wilds, which at the moment is the only Facility in the world with fifth-generation rhinos, making this an huge success!
The third rhino is a male that, with great surprise, was born in Zoo Du Bassin D’Arcachon (FR). It’s the first Eastern Black Rhinos surviving his birth in France. This male was born on 6 December 2019 at 10PM from a very young firt time mother called Nabila. The young female was paired succesfully with the residing bull called Dzanti: this male had another calf in 2013 from the zoo’s other female, called Jane Lee, that unfortunately died soon after his birth. Hence it’s a great success for the European Black Rhino population since the mother is really young (a bit over six years old): it’s in fact really important for Black Rhinos too to begin reproduction in the shortest time after reaching sexual maturity. At the moment the calf has no name: in the video published on the facility’s Facebook page you can see the birth process that lasted around 30 minutes. The calf stands up after nearly an hour and after 30 more minutes he can be seen suckling from his mum.
