Southern White Rhino Rihanna gave birth to her second calf, a female, in March 2019 from bull Atari. Her name is still unknown, but the zoo announced that it will start for R.

The facility claims to be the best breeder in the European area, having three females succeeding in reproduction (Rihanna, Keren Peles and Tanda). That’s, of course, an awesome result, but we have to keep in mind that there are three other females that are currently inactive, so there’s still room for improvement!

Another important factor to keep in mind about this Safari is that, aside from Terkel (one of Tanda’s and Atari’s son) that has been moved to a Russian facility, all the various calves are still residing with their parents. This could be a problem, beacuase for example Teshi is already 5 years old, a sexually mature age for a rhino, still resides with her father, Atari, that is the only male sexually mature residing there. In breeding in fact greatly arises the possibility of genetic diseases.

Moreover it’s always a good thing to have rhinos being moved between facilities and countries to mantain the genetical heritage.
