After the death of Thomy, as written few weeks ago, Japan loses another Eastern Black Rhino, the female called Maki. Here’s what our Yuko writes about her:
“In Japan, two Black Rhinos died one after the other. On  26 February 2019 , Maki, a female Black Rhino died at the age of 28 at Kamine Zoo in Ibaraki: it was only about twenty days after the death of Thomy (“Tom”), a male Black Rhino in Osaka.
Maki has been suffering from anorexia, weight loss, dermatitis and arthritis for three years; her veterinarian kept searching for the cause in various way, and finally found out that the most suspected cause of her death is multiple organ failure from chronic hypercalcemia due to the diet.
Zoos usually do not publish detailed information on the cause of an animal death, but the veterinarian in charge of Maki reported in detail about her illness and treatment on Kamine Zoo official blog for those concerned about Maki.
That would be brave as a veterinarian.
Yuki Akiba, veterinarian in charge of Maki, says: “Maki was a great teacher for me, I am grateful to Maki.”
Here is her touching blog about the death of Maki , with many pictures.
And here is a picture of Maki and one of her calves, Sunny, in 2011″.
