With deep sadness we have to report that young Southern White Rhino Jaharo, 6 years old, has passed away. According to the Official source, Jaharo was struggling against a suspected  immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, a well-known disease in humans and cats, but as far as we know, never described in Rhinoceroses.

He felt sick in Autumn last year, but he was able to recover thanks to intensive care provided by Zoo staff and vets. Unfortunately, Jaharo conditions worsened rapidly during Sunday and, besides any efforts spent, Jaharo’s conditions never improved. He died on Sunday 27 January 2019.

Jaharo was born in September 2012 as second child for rhino couple Julie and Fireball and he had a great genetical value. He was transferred to Maryland Zoo in November 2016 where he met the Zoo resident male, Stubby, who is still living at the zoo.

According to Zoo Official release, they will work with the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) to establish if they will bring in another rhino as a companion for Stubby.
