Hamilton Zoo, located in the homonymous city of New Zealand, has announces that one of its Southern White Rhino is expecting a calf. Female Kito is eight months old pregnant and should give birth around March or April 2020! This is a very good news during a 2019 which is revealing itself as a year poorer in calves than hoped among Rhinos in the world.

Kito has given birth three times prior: in 2010 to a male calf called Ubuntu, in 2013 to a stillborn female calf and in 2016 to a male calf called Samburu. The last one is still with her, since there were some difficulties for him to be separated from his big mum.

The Zoo did not say the name of Kito’s partner, but we can assume he could be the resideent male Kruger.

We recall that the zoo has got other resident females that are not succesfully breeding. It is really important for them to start it in the near future or it will be too late. Maybe, we can suggest that some changes are needed between the Rhino herd to give any components the opportunite to contribute to the Australasian Breeding Program.
