Great joy form rhino world! In Pairi Daiza Cambron-Casteau (BE) the much anticipated first of two baby Southern White Rhino has born!
The baby is a male and was born in the late morning on Monday 25 November 2019 to first time mom Madiba, almost 11 years old. The calf is extremely valuable because is also Joby first baby, arrived in Belgium from France in 2017. The parents meeting has been carefully prepared.

This is a huge victory for the White Rhino European breeding program since both parents weren’t able to breed in the previous years. Madiba wasn’t able to get pregnant with two males that lived in the zoo previously: only with Joby the mating was succesful. This fact is really important because, otherwise, she would have been added to the already too long list of female that were never been able to breed after the age of 10 in the zoos worldwide. Also for Joby things were not easy since he wasn’t able to mate with two females, back in France. As soon as the transferred in Pairi Daiza was completed he “conquered” both females, Madiba and Eleonor (which is pregnant and should give birth by the end of the year).

For Pairi Daiza this male is the second one after Sethemba Vasta, son of Eleonor, whom is in Spain by Spring 2019 alongside two other males from Hodenhagen (DE).

It’s really curious that this male born in Pairi Daiza is the sixth born in Europe in 2019. The only female born this year is from United Kingdom and is named Stella.
