Here we are with a lot of dainty news from the globe about our beloved Rhinos!

Najuma‘s journey and her mum Nane‘s (possible) pregnancy
Since the beginning of November 2018 we have witnessed a lot of movements in the European Eastern Black Rhino metapopulation. The last transfers were linked to the big project that it is scheduled to take place in May or June next year, when five selected Black Rhinos will be reintroduced to Rwanda. Tha last one, in order of time, regards Krefeld (DE) youngest Rhinoceros: Eastern Black Rhino Najuma, fifth calf of the resident pair of Black Rhinos, has left her native place to reach her new home. The young lady, who just turned 2 years old at the end of August, reached Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster (UK) during the morning of 4 December 2018. This young lady has been chosen as resident male Makibo‘s mate. Both Rhinos are quite young at the moment, so we have to wait some years before they could become a successfull breeding couple.
In the meanwhile, at Krefeld, pair Nane and Usoni could be expecting their sixth calf for the end of summer, next year. At the moment, Zoo Officials have not confirmed this thrilling news, only insinuated it!

Zoo Miami Indian Rhino Akuti is pregnant!
At the end of November, Zoo Miami, which is located in Florida, USA, has announced a gorgeous Rhino news: its resident Indian Rhino female, called Akuti, 6 years old, is pregnant! The young lady should give birth to her first calf around April 2019.
Akuti’s pregnant was obtained through induced ovulation, a procedure that is still being perfectioned in the Indian Rhinos, and artificial insemination performed with Suru’s semen (Suru is the Indian Rhino male that resides at Zoo Miami).
This operation could open new sceneries for the conservation of this Endangered species: it could become easier to manage the reproduction of important gene pools that live far away from another.
An example is Buffalo Zoo Indian Rhino Tashi: her pregnancy has been obtained through artificial insemination, using again Suru’s semen! In this particular case, Tashi and her mate, George, did get along well and did mate, too, but unfortunately no pregnancy was ever confirmed.

Two new Rhinos for Dvůr Králové (CZ)
Safari Park Dvůr Králové (CZ) announed few hours ago that a new baby Eastern Black Rhino has been born, bringing the Zoo’s number of Black Rhinos to 20 (according to our sources), the biggest in Europe! The new baby rhino, a male that has not received a name yet, was born on Sunday 9 December 2018, as third calf for mum Maisha and the 46th for the Facility. He weighted almost 40 kilos at birth, becaming one of the biggest ever born at the Zoo. His full-sister, Molly, born in 2015, is the heaviest female ever born at the Zoo. The new rhino’s dad is bull Mweru.

Surprise is not over: the Facility has just welcome a third female Southern White Rhino from Montpellier, South France. Jabulani, 18 years old, will be introduced to the resident trio of Rhinos: male Pamir and females Jessica and Themba. Montpellier recently welcomed a new male, but something seems to have not worked well and Jabulani’s transferred has became necessary. We do really hope that this time Jabulani could conceived and become a mum in the (really) near future.
