Colchester Zoo (UK) informed that on Wednesday 11 July 2018 a hard decision was taken by the Vet team: Southern White Rhino Flossy was put to sleep. The old lady was extimated to be 49 years old.
During the past year she has been receiving cures for a skin condition that “appeared as weeping growths”. Flossy also had arthritis in her back legs and that worsened her health condition, till no further treatment could be given.
Flossy arrived in Colchester in 1972. She didn’t have any calves on her own, but she had a lovely nature that made her the perfect “grandmother figure” for the calves born in the Park during the years.
