It is with great pleasure that we can announce that Colchetser‘s Southern White Rhino Astrid, six and an half years old, is pregnant! The young female is expecting her very first calf, as it was confirmed by hormone analysis. Astrid’s partner is the residing male Otto, that welcomed at the beginning of the year calf Lottie from the other female rhino Emily.

Astrid is believed to deliver her baby around September-October of the current year. This is indeed a great news since Astrid is of great genetical value: her mom is in fact of wild origins.

The rhino crash at Colchester consists now in breeding bull Otto, breeding females Astrid and Emily with her last daughter Lottie and Binta a female that was unable to breed prior and has arrived to Colchester in November last year. We do really hope for Binta to be a mother in the near future. The herd has another rhino, three years old Kifaru, which is the previous calf of Emily and Otto: he will be transferred soon in another facility in the near future but we do not have more detailed information at the moment.
