Just in time for World Rhino day, that as usual happens on 22 September, CERZA Park de Safaris in Lisieux (FR) has announced the birth of a Southern White Rhino. The baby, a male, was born out in the grassland exhibit on 14 September 2020.

Mom Beth, 18 yers and an half, has given birth to her second calf less than two years after the first one, her daughter Kwanza. Vet team was called in the morning by keepers but, luckily, no support was needed as the baby was up on his feet already sucking from mom a few hours after the birth.

Beth found an ideal partner in male Chris, the resident bull. The two calves they had together represent an huge success for the Southern White Rhino breeding program since Beth had to be moved three times before being able to conceive. This achievement demonstrate once again how important it’s the exchange of rhinos females that are not breeding between facilities.

There are two other females in Lisieux that we hope could contribute to the population soon.

The little calf has not received a name yet, but remembering that Kwanza received her name months after her birth it could be possible that it won’t be named really soon.
