Fantastic news from England! Not one, but two baby rhino boys have seen the light of the day few days apart.

The first one is a fourth generation Eastern Black Rhino: he was born to first-time mum Kissima and dad Sammy at Port Lympne Reserve. Zoo Director describes him as a “strong, healthy, playful and curious” baby calf. He was born on Friday 5 January 2018 and weighted 32 Kg: Keepers installed cameras in order to monitor the birth process. Everything went perfectly and Kissima, only 5 years and half, has taken motherhood all in her stride. Port Lympne Reserve proudly hosts not only Kissima and her not-yet-named calf, but also Kisima’s mother and grandmother (you can check their names through our Id pages!). There is a fantastic footage of the baby rhino’s birth on the Zoo Blog page here .

The second one is a Southern White Rhino and was born between 20 and 21 January 2018 in Knowsley Safari Park. His mum is experienced mother Meru that still has her previous calf on her side, a female called Nomvula. The Rhino Team leader explained that the little guy is “a bouncing bundle of joy, who’s been busy exploring his new surroundings”. It will be very interesting to see how the things between the Rhino crash may change, now that Meru has another calf to raise: “it’s likely that Meru won’t tolerate Nomvula getting too close to her newborn baby boy”., added the Rhino Team Leader. The calf is still unnamed, but it will be launched soon a competition for people to suggest a name for the new baby boy. The calf’s dad is again Rhino bull Sharka.
