It is with deep sadness that we share not one, but two tragic news that happened in a row between few hours one from another.

The much anticipated birth in Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine (FR) didn’t turned out to be as happy as hoped. Tisa entered in labour during the evening of Sunday 17 September 2017 but something went wrong. Part of the fetal membranes showed up, but not the baby’s feet. The process took much time to end and the baby, a male, at birth was not able to get on his feet, not even with Tisa helping him carefully. The calf stopped breathing few minutes later and it was clear that his death was due to lack of oxygen during the labour.  Through its Official Facebook page Zoo is really affected by the loss, but it preserves some hopes for the future, since Tisa’s health was not affected during the labour, she was able to bring to term a pregnancy at 23 years of age and she will cycle again in the near future.

In Ree Safari Park (DK) Keepers found little Shaya dead in the morning of Monday 18 September 2017. The little calf, born on 3 July 2017 to Bashira and Thabo,  fell ill the day before her death. Vet team and Keeper promptly helped her, through analgesic and parenteral alimentation, but it turned out that the cause was much more serious than a simple constipation. Shaya was probably hit in the chest by a kick or a blow from another animal and her body didn’t cope with the damage. Her death was probably due to kidney failure and Zoo is waiting for post-portem results. Bashira seemed to be quite well and Zoo is hoping she will meet again her mate Thabo in the near future.
