A female black rhino, Hana, turned 50 years old on July 14,2016, in Asa – Hiroshima Zoo (JP)!
It’ a record ! She is the oldest black rhino in the world.
Her name means “Flower” in Japanese.
When she arrived to Asa Zoo from Kenya with her partner Kuro on 14 July 1971 she was 5 years old.
She gave birth to 12 calves and her descendants nowaday are more than 60!
Some of them have been transfered to foreign zoos: for example Port Lympne (UK) hosts Sammy #750,
Sedgwick Zoo(USA) hosts Bibi #711, Dehiwala Zoo(Sri Lanka) hosts Honey #731….
We are proud of you, HANA !
The secret of a long life is “Bread with liquid Gulcosamine supplement” according to her keeper, Hana likes it very much!
