Great excitement in Kerkrade (NL) as the Facility receives on 2 May 2017 its first female Southern White Rhino ever. She came from Dortmund (DE) where she was born in 2014 and her name is Abebi. It is hoped for her to breed one day with the resident male Thabo (we talk about him here).

At the moment, Zoo Officials say the two Rhinos are not going to meet physically. They need to smell and hear each other first, as Rhinos are not very predictable and Zoo wants the first encounter to be as safe as possible.

While Thabo, born in 2011, could be considerate almost sexually mature, Abebi is still young, as in the best of conditions, Southern White Rhino females gave birth around their sixth years of life.
