Gulf Breeze Zoo, located in Florida, announced few days ago that there is a new inhabitant and it is the very first one in its history.
On 20 January 2018 a Southern White Rhino calf was born to first time mother Kathie, 8 years old. The baby is a female and she has received the name Katana. She is now 4 months old and is thriving!

Mom Kathie was born in South Africa and was introduced to her partner Robbie in 2013, when the bull arrived at Gulf Breeze from the Center for Conservation of Tropical Ungulates, located in Florida, too.

Katana’s birth is a truly wonderful news for the US Southern White Rhino Breeding Pogram: only few animals do breed among the Facilities involved and the majority are always the same breeders.

We were pleasantly surprised about this little female’s birth, since it is vey rare that a single couple of White Rhino could produce offspring. The best chance in this way is to have at least two females for crash.
