With deep sadness we report that Eastern Black Rhino Elly, 46 years old, passed away in San Francisco (California, USA) on 3 May 2017.

According to Zoo Officials her health was deteriorating and, after an exploratory surgery on one of her legs, it was decided to put her to sleep, as her conditions were not going to improve.

Elly acted as a perfect ambassador for her specie, helping in sensibilizing people about the plague wild rhinos are facing in their native place.

According to our sources, Elly gave birth to 13 calves. Official sources talked about 14, instead. We invite anyone who knows who is the fourteenth to contact us: we’ll be very grateful and we’ll upgrade our data.

Some of these calves are still alive nowadays and resides in North America’s zoo while one of them, Hailstone, lives in Japan!
