Great joy and surprise cames from Givskud Zoo (DK) where a new baby has arrived!

Southern White Rhino Mazumba, 10 years old, gave birth to a lively calf on Friday, 15 September 2017. The baby is her third and Mazumba is showing to be an expert mother.

Mazumba came to Givskud Zoo from Beekse Bergen (NL) in February 2017 (we talked about that here) and she was in the middle of the pregnancy. Givskud Director decided to take some precautions before introducing Mazumba to the resident male, Otzee, in order to avoid any stress on the mother-to-be. Meanwhile, as the term was approaching, Keepers kept an attentive eye on Mazumba, but the birth came a little earlier than expected. At firts glince, the baby seemed to be a male – that because male calves, usually, came a little earlier than female ones – but the calf is instead a female!

The baby’s father should be male Limpopo, that still resides in Beekse Bergen. This year even Beekse Bergen had a Southern White Rhino birth, but the calf unfortunately didn’t survive, as we tell you here.
