Great joy in Taronga Western Plains Zoo (AU) when a baby rhino was born on 11 April 2017. The baby female, weighting at birth 30 kilograms, is the first Southern Black Rhino known to be born among Zoos since 2015!

She has not a name yet, but is really important as she is the third generation black rhino born in the Facility, where resides both her grandmother and her grand-grandmother.

The baby’s mum is called Kufara and is shown a perfect maternal behaviour: she’s cautious and is really caring for her precious newborn.

Kufara was born in February 2010 to first-time mum Bakhita who still resides there with her second calf, a male called Dafari born in 2015.

Bakhita’s mother is called Kalungwizi and is almost 30 years old.

It’s not known who is the little newborn father’s, but he is likely to be 15 years old Kwanzaa.

Kufara and her baby are in a behind-the-scenes area where they’ll reside till June in order to bond properly.

Here it is a video of them both on the Zoo’s Official Facebook Page.
